Outed yourself here. They're direct synaptic connections to the hivemind that lesser tyrannids use as a synaptic connection to it. That's why in gameplay, whenever you kill one, there is a psychic feedback on the gaunts surrounding the slain warrior. Which is not only a thing in lore but also in gameplay in Space Marine 2 and on the tabletop.
