The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Why was it rebranded? I know Mormon has a negative connotation, but isn't this deceptive? It's feels like admitting falsehood and distancing yourself from yourself.

Any Mormons please weigh in with thoughts And do you still call yourself Mormons? Or is it more of a you do, but not in public, kind of thing?
