What about larger brakes? 16" was the minimum for pic related from 20+ years ago, 17" for the following generation, and both were not known for having strong brakes even with hydraulic boosters.

It brings disadvantages as well, the first one is riding your sidewalls when turning sharp. Higher rolling resistance is the other one, having 1-2 more MPGs listed can be a major advantage in NPC market.
