>SUVs shouldn't be allowed to have wheels bigger than 18 inches
What about larger brakes? 16" was the minimum for pic related from 20+ years ago, 17" for the following generation, and both were not known for having strong brakes even with hydraulic boosters.
>People don't realize how nice a big sidewall is and the benefits that it brings
It brings disadvantages as well, the first one is riding your sidewalls when turning sharp. Higher rolling resistance is the other one, having 1-2 more MPGs listed can be a major advantage in NPC market.

Whenever I see pictures of Chevy or Cadillac suvs in articles from gulf countries like UAE, Saudi's or Qatar it's always some vip from US. Locals prefer Range Rovers or Mercs and sometimes RR or Bentley if it doesn't need to be 6/7 seater.

When costs doesn't matter nobody outside of US uses glorified pickup trucks. I wonder if these rich Arabs just keep American suvs to look friendly to American leaders.

sorry anon, that's just bullshit.
the american suvs are the only true 6/7 seaters out there. sure, you can fit 6/7 in an x7 or gls, but then you can hardly fit a laptop in what remains of the trunk
the only exception to this rule is the LR defender 130, and its still smaller than the american ones.

the reason you don't see those suvs outside the us is poverty and convenience. outside the us, its basically just a few europeans that can afford 80-100k vehicles, and european roads are REALLY unsuitable for vehicles of that size. which is why the x7 and gls are so small, in comparison. its not that merc or bmw don't realize that sometimes you might want to carry luggage for 6/7, its that they know the cars will be undrivable here.

>the reason you don't see those suvs outside the us is poverty and convenience
These gulf Arab countries aren't poor and they have plenty of space on roads to use whatever they like. Chevy/Cadillac is used solely for US delegations. I've checked and in case of delegation from other countries Saudis are using Mercs (limos, not suvs). When Putin was visiting Dubai locals bought Russian Aurus (limo built on Porsche Panamera) just to pick him up from the airport. When costs and space doesn't matter rich Arabs still prefer European cars for themselves and everyone else (except for Americans). Their wives nowadays are as fat as some of American women, but they still fit in Range Rovers and GLS along with driver and 5 children.

When you need plenty of space with more seats you can use a bus/van. If you need plenty of space in luxurious car, there's something like Rolls Royce Cullinan with 4 huge seats (or 2, 3, 4 such cars when there are more people to drive around).

Huge SUVs on pickup's platform aren't made of practicallity or luxury but are very specific, cultural, American thing where wasting space around you is identified with personal freedom. Finding niche for these glorified farmer's trucks anywhere else is pure cope, because even for thousands of kilometers of highway, body on frame will never feel as smooth and comfy and fast as unibody (and we can agree that using these in cities is pure masochism). Offroad? You can't do that on these modern, thin tires anyway.
>But there are 7 of us and we're all 200 kgs and we need holders for our 2 liter soda cups along with place for laptops for doing serious business when we ride
No, you don't. Truth is, that if you can't fit into something like XC-90 or even Q7, there's something wrong with you and riding in a car is least of your problems.

do you genuinely believe this? That people in Northern Europe/Japan/the Gulf donโ€™t have the money for a 50k SUV? Why are they all driving around in their own 100k SUVs then where American products donโ€™t make a dent in the market?

Itโ€™s not just SUVs, either. The dictators all go with Bentley, Mercedes, Rolls Royce or Lexus. Toyota dominates the harshest conditions in the world with the Hilux and LC. The fact is that the American stuff just isnโ€™t as good and sells well in the US because of finance deals offered to actual poor people

perhaps i wasn't clear. what i mean is
-the only place outside the us/canada where lots of people can afford 80-100k suvs is europe
-but american suvs don't work in europe for size reasons
-outside of europe and north america, very few people can afford them
-ergo, you will only see them in significant numbers in the us/canada

>Why are they all driving around in their own 100k SUVs
rich euros will drive euro luxury suvs for the reasons explained above
elsewhere, you don't see many of them anyway

>dictators all go with Bentley, Mercedes, Rolls Royce or Lexus.
uhm... ok?

>Toyota dominates the harshest conditions in the world with the Hilux and LC
also ok?

>The fact is that the American stuff just isnโ€™t as good
i think i explained exactly what niche the american suvs fill. 6/7 passengers + their cargo. nothing else can do this, except minivans or vans, which nobody wants to be seen in.
i never said they're as luxurious as a bentayga or cullininan, or as sporty as a cayenne or urus, or as offroad capable as a land cruiser.
i said they're giant people carriers and that they outclass everyone else is this regard.

Kekd
Find a road where your typical SUV won't be able to corner at 2x posted speed and where the traffic/cops/whatever will allow keeping that speed first.
You won't, at least not easily.
Most cars on the road are fucking slow. Roads were built with way older vehicles, tires and way worse drivers in mind, so you have to do something really stupid to approach the limits of even an older truck (I own one too, so it's from experience), and SUVs are usually better at it.
And I bet a truck can handle more roads and corners simply because it can keep higher speed over rough and dirty parts of them without damage or loss of control.

Fuck that both suvs and vans started from same point, have similar general construction and what differs them is basically small stuff that differs different models of same kind (size of wheels, engine, suspension etc). Do you have eyes? You really don't see that square ass that is hiding interior taken straight from premium vans (because these exist too)?

Yeah, to vast majority of Earth's population newer generations of huge American suvs look, feel and function exactly how typical vans. No wonder everyone prefers fancy Mercs and Rovers.

Vans just like suvs can both be unibody or body on frame. However even this distinction is getting blur because you can buy yourself a van that's theoretically unibody, but just with cabin, where rest of body is whatever you put on. Point is that both vans and pickups (such as those from which Suburban/Escalade took it's platform) have exactly same roots as small trucks and they share many similarities.

Another thing is that unibody design is exactly what makes travelling faster and more comfortable. This is exactly why European 7 seaters (no matter if suvs like RR or GLS, or even luxurious variations of vans) are preferable by everyone outside US. People usually prefer to feel comfy instead of feeling like bags of fertilizer (or whatever your rednecks have on their backseat).

The "square ass" that has been present in these trucks since at least the 1970s? There were no Escalades, there were no SUVs, Euro vans were small and faggy with no sign of luxury, but there was the Suburban. Oh, look, it does even have the doors like vans have!

My argument is that main difference in construction (muh body on frame!) doesn't matter that much and where it does, it drags American suvs behind comfy European suvs and vans.

I wonder why Americans are so obsessed with body on frame in "premium" suvs like it gives them any advantage. Probably because they grew up into liking this, just like they grew up into liking chocolate that tastes like vomit.

>All I know is I've been in a lot better riding BOF vehicles than unibody vehicles.
Because you got used to it. I bet you don't feel choked by corn syrup in your sodas either.

There are several advantages of unibody design. Let's stick to what's most important to SUVs: lower center of gravity means you can ride faster and car doesn't feel like it's going to turn over on its side (because it will if you try turning with faster speed). That's espacially important in SUVs and that's why when your goal is transport of any amount of people as fast, safe and comfortable as possible, unibody is way to go. Even modern buses are more often unibody.

Things like bad roads can be overcome with better suspension in unibody, but you can't change physics when you try riding faster with BOF. I'm not even touching stuff like lightweight (so manufacturers can squeeze more fancy stuff) and lower fuel consumption (greater range).

"Luxurious" or even "premium" SUV designed on frame is oxymoron. GM was trying to sell Escalade to rich Russians. They even opened assembly plants in Russia and Belarus to overcome stuff like import costs or innate poor built quality of American cars. But even Russians sticked to Range Rover or Mercedes or BMW. Just like Arabs and just like everyone else in the world except for Americans.

I have previous gen RX (OEM 19" wheels, 55% sidewall, standard suspension) and I don't like how it handles bumps and potholes in terms of spinal comfort compared even to GMT800 with coil spring rear end. I'm thinking about switching to 18" wheels, but it probably won't change much: it's Camry platform with car suspension travel range underneath, and it's heavy. Non-hybrid without rear wheel drive might be a bit lighter (also front-heavy), but who knows. Try it if you can.

Itโ€™s funny, I got a new Sienna as a rental because they didnโ€™t have the sedan I selected as my preferred choice (it was the cheapest option) when I reserved my vehicle rental car. It was extremely spacious as you would expect of a mini van, the seats were easy to fold/put away to make all of that extra space, and honestly it was quite peppy for a mini van easily overtaking slower traffic when I needed to and yeah that mpg was damn good for such a large vehicle on par with a cuvโ€™s mpg iirc.

Iโ€™ve been meaning to ask for peopleโ€™s option on older suv designs/dimensions. I have a 3rd gen 4runner and typically suv of that era are smaller looking than current/modern SUVs. When I first test drove the 3rd gen 4runner I was pleasantly surprised how similar it felt to drive and turn into corners/parking spots like a modern sedan/coupe and it didnโ€™t felt as wide as my dadโ€™s new Tacoma.
Do you think older SUVs are also โ€œgiantโ€ sized?
Personally I wanted a SUV/truck, and in this case specifically the 4runner, is because I do a lot of activities thatโ€™s are out in the wilderness/off road environments and Iโ€™m fine with not having the most performant vehicle on the highway/roads when Iโ€™m in town and Iโ€™m getting older and donโ€™t really care about speeding to get to some destination quicker for whatever reason.

Mom is looking at getting an SUV, she doesn't like the sedan that she's driving and wants something newer (E39 M5), and I get to buy her car and pull the engine out of the M5 she's currently driving and slap it into my E30 like a fucking degen. All around fucking win. Top end budget is $32k for her. She wants an SUV as they are higher up, and she hates being that low with lights in her eye constantly. She wants more storage in the rear, and she likes the idea of having a bigger vehicle in the event she's in an accident she would slightly better protected. AWD is a must for her as we get snow and rain, the M5 breaks loose. She knows how to drive, I've seen her power over after the rear end broke free once and it was a sight I would never forget. BUT she would like something a little more stable on the road.

So some options:
>2025 Subaru Outback
>2025 Subaru Crosstrek
She likes the idea of a new car, but hasn't bought a new car in over 20 years, and doesn't understand the horrors on the car industry all too well. She is open to the idea of used.
Other options that I have found in the area are two of each brand for variance listed below:
>2014-2016 Lexus GX460 ($26-28k, 70-100k miles),
>2018-2019 Volvo XC90 ($21-$22k 70-90k miles)
>2017-2019 Toyota Highlander ($23-25k 90-110k miles)
I hear those Lexus are awesome and people hold onto them, but with the new GX550 a lot of trades are happening and now would be a good time to scoop one up. For the Volvo, it looks like most of the depreciation is out of it, maintenance is considered 2x higher that the Lexus over the 10 year span, but the insurance rate for her is shockingly low as with the Lexus. Lastly the Highlander is in there as an option just for similarity, they look nice have similar comforts, Toyota has a good reputation for reliability, but honestly if the price is that close to the Lexus we might just go with that option. What do you guys think, anything else I could consider, thoughts or concerns?

I would go with the Lexus especially if she is used to luxury design cues with driving a bmw m5.
Also Lexus/Toyota is just gonna be much more reliable.

Yea that's pretty much what I was thinking. She likes the GX460, drawback is that it's a gashog with the weight, but I like the fact that it's an NA V8 rather than a supercharger or turbo option in the Volvo, and a little bit more than the V6 in the highlander. However owners of the Lexus are basically like "yup. Nothing but oil changes and gas... nothing has gone wrong."

No it has a centre locking dif on all but no low range on gen 2, you could even get a rear locker for the 958 but it's ultra rare on both gens, works on my machine TM got stuck once in soft snow but even the guy who gave me a tow strap almost got stuck with a 80s chevy 4x4 thats half the weight and has giant mud tires

Fair they have great space but a 5 seat suv makes a lot more sense as a daily as a sedan replacement

Yeah, meant this.

So no low range, no front locker at all and the rear one is unobtanium? That's as close to the second best SUV as my hybrid Lexus cuckover. In other words, very far from it. I'm not the Tahoeposter, but I have a GMT800 to compare the cuckover to.

SUVs are based and I don't care about those people who hate on them.
CUVs on the other hand can be made fun of, I don't care for them and should not be classified as a SUV.
