I don't know what exact advice you got in the previous thread but I can recommend AK texture pastes Desert Sand and/or Sandy Desert. You get a pretty nice looking desert base with just a sepia wash and bone drybrush. If you throw in some dry tufts and rocks it looks very solid for not that much effort imo.
