Are they decent enough? I'm running low on Agrax and Nuln and I'd basically end up paying the same amount for those 2 alone as I would for these 8

Thinking of painting a weirdboy with the recesses in the skin being fluorescent green, but not sure how to go about doing it. Would it be easier just to paint the skin tones first, then varnish, followed by using an oil white paint diluted to an ink consistency to run through all of the recesses, and using the AK flouro green wargame pigment over the top of it?

you either need to make the barrels in two halves or use a three part mold, the second is not an option to GW they dont even know the technology exists

look how molds work, you can't have overhangs, you can't do a barrel flat on the sprue and make it have a hole on one end, because the mold comes from either side not from the front
if you ever put together anything square that comes in to halves you can see how is never really square becuase it needs a draft angle to be able to came off the mold at all

picrel is a barrel with a hole on the sprue, you can see how the edge of the sprue has a slot for a third element to come in from the side of the mold to do the hole

Okay, little conclusion from previous thread post about varnishes, here are better quality photos made with actual camera rather than phone, done on painting training marines. Each varnish was heavily shaken before use and applied with brush damped in water, allowed to dry overnight. Summing up with additional notes:

>Vallejo matt varnish, either straight from bottle or 1-1 thinned with their own thinner ends up rather glossy and dry long. I applied second layer next day, didnt change the glossy effect.
>Vallejo Premium Color on very close inspection shows small bubbles in crevices and similar areas but normally invisible to naked eye. More satin than matte but otherwise even, might slightly saturate colors.
>Vallejo "Mecha Color", tested as mixed either with their flow improver (one drop in 5 drops of varnish) or Vallejo Thinner (1-1), have same result - nice, even, matte effect with only slight trace of gloss. Mixing with water is not recommended, it will separate quickly and leave pool marks or frosting. Suggested to use in small amount at time and stir regularly as it tends to separate. Quite durable mechanically.
>AK "Ultra Matt" with "Matt Varnish" and GW "Contrast Medium" (25-25-50%), very good matte and probably best final effect. Require good mixing before use or can cause frosty/chalky effect and desaturate colors
>Small bonus in form of Gouache Varnish thinned with white spirit (in this case from Talens brand) - aside from subtle matte effect barely change the surface but varnish is there for sure and have acceptable mechanical resistance. If you want to be a painting hipster, it sure is an option.

Tldr: AK "Ultra Matt" + "Matte Varnish" + Contrast Medium is probably best option but Vallejo "Mecha Color" Matte Varnish 50-50 with Vallejo Thinner is also good and probably cheaper.

Thin the paints more and do multiple coats instead. Best way to seperate the trim and panels would be to paint a very thinned down dark color directly into the recess where they meet but that might be a bit too difficult starting out. You could just put a wash over the entire panel, it will naturally run towards the recesses. Afterwards you reapply your original basecoat over the panel but skipping the recesses. Duncan Rhodes' beginner videos are pretty good at explaning the basics, I'd give them a watch.
Oh and also I don't know how much of your scheme is going to be yellow but black is a REALLY bad primer to start from for this color. It's infinitely easier to paint black over a grey or white primer than it is to paint yellow over a black primer. Might be something to consider in the future.

But you said that most of them are too dark so solution would be more drybrushing? 1# was made with mud paste, covered with rust wash and drybrushed with orange red and dark yellow, 2# was made with sand paste, treated with dark brown wash and drybrushed with Vallejo "dark sand", 3# was brown earth paste with rust wash and drybrushed with "dark sand" and "pale sand", 4# was sand paste with sepia wash and "pale sand" drybrush.

Basecoating is boring and tedious because you're just coloring in and the end result is bland and boring
Shading is boring and tedious because acrylic washes are doodoo and oil washes take ages to dry
Layering and highlighting is boring and tedious because you have to paint at least 2 more colors on top of each material with tiny lines and fine brushes all scrunched up to brace against the shakiness
Blending/glazing is boring and tedious because it takes a 100 layers to smooth out a single transition
Weathering is boring and tedious because after you're close to being done you have to go back and do more work and add a bunch of effects, bells and whistles across the minis in such a way to make it look both realistic and not overdone
Basing is boring and tedious because you're just repeating the same 2-4 steps a dozen times
Assembling is boring and tedious because you're just following instructions and going through same motions without much creative input
Priming/varnishing is boring and tedious because you just blast minis with a rattle can/airbrush and then watch the paint dry

I think I might just be burnt out

I don't think they're cheating. The technology is real but more expensive obviously. Regular metallics have aliminium flakes sealed in a polymer with micah and dye. The problem with this way is that the flakes will start separating from the color if you dilute it too much. With their method the flake is dyed then sealed in a polymer which they claim gives more vibrant color and you can't wash the flakes out when you dilute the paint.

>starts spraying very weakly one day
>disassemble, clean it with acetone, leave it in water
>try it again next day
>same issue
>order a new chinesium .5mm needle and nozzle since all of the issues I've ever had with my airbrush stem from nozzle clogs
>same issue with brand new needle and nozzle
>loosen nozzle cap by a lot and it starts to spray much harder
>create a mini rainbow over my desk with how much water it's spraying at strong pressure
>screw nozzle cap back on and it's back to spraying like somebody is choking it

Does ANYONE know what the issue could be? I am trying to order from my usual Hobby shop but they're OOS on the pieces I normally get. I think it might be some issue with the nozzle cap. I have been using .5mm needles for about a year but this time I'm going to buy a smaller size, nozzle, and nozzle cap. I don't know if this will work but I'm trying to troubleshoot and the pieces are cheap enough that I don't care. I know this is a commonly recommended airbrush so I'm hoping I'm having a problem that some experts can help me with.

Pic rel is the airbrush spraying at an angle. I know the caps are off but it was behaving the same way with them on. I hope you can see the water shooting upward.

with characters you can have more leeway if they dont usually integrate in an unit, like a lone mage you can put him on some cobbles as if he's on a tower unlike the rest of the army who would be in the field

I use model color sky grey
It's a cooler white but it has such great coverage, I can do it over black, that you could hit with a brighter white after

Also found an older pic of that mix over light grey (1 coat)

Well damn, this actually looks nice. Was I just unlucky with my corax or something? It always applied unevenly for me and the consistency was always off no matter how much I thinned it. Maybe it's the ink that's helping a lot?

Oh yes it most definitely helps. Corax white in my experience makes for a good paint to mix the ink with, definitely better than my other current white (AK 3rd gen white) which has some weird sticky consistency to it and is a bit of a bitch to work with, so I just use it for really small highlights (ex dots on lenses)

Then again that is a pure titanium white, they are notoriously more difficult than off-whites like corax white (which is a very bright grey)
