I'd heard that before, but your bringing it up reminds me that the first Supreme Court case on the Second Amendment is equally bizarre. The case is U.S. v. Miller, from 1938, and it dealt with the NFA. Some highlights include:
>court-appointed counsel for the defense getting appointed to state senator's seat immediately after trial
>unusually fast movement by a district judge, with a clear intent to rule the NFA unconstitutional
>said judge had previously been a vocal advocate of gun control in Congress before being appointed to the bench
>direct appeal to the Supreme Court, no stop in the circuits
>opinion drafted and delivered by the over-the-hill Justice McReynolds, deals with the issues perfunctorily despite this being a Constitutional case of first impression

As a small side note, I think it's worth pointing out that McReynolds may be second only to Taney as most hated justice of all time in modern legal circles. If your interested in a deeper look at the weirdness, I recommend link related.
