Clearly, connections. I used to play CoD zombies years ago and I remember the Treyarch devs used to talk with this guy and the others heavily around Black Ops2/3, then 4 happened and Activision's whole gameplan changed and Zombies no longer mattered (it hadn't been good since like maybe specific BO3 maps anyway).
He went to god knows how many vidcon conventions or meetups, he had his own "content creator" house, he probably is friends with someone who works at bungie or something since Activision shared staff for a brief bit. It's not talent, its "knowing people"
