Unless I'm very bad at math, if it's 7 or so drops from Encore, at 15 min runs at only +4 gains and you assume there's going to be dupes, basically non stop no beat skipped etc, that's kind of absurd amount of time it takes to get to the 2,3,400 benchmark and that doesn't factor in things will get longer on higher difficulty to be more efficient. Unless everybody's fucking up, I'm lost that this is actually the only really viable efficient grind. Even power leveling in week 1 of a new expansion never took this long and you had limitations of sources of loot back then as well. This trade off sucks weiner

Saying Lightfall was "shit" was always an exaggeration. It was majorly flawed in both story and execution, but it was at least a full expansion compared to Shadowkeep and Edge of Fate. Drifter and Eris are absolutely the worst offenders. I think Drifter might be the worst, because he's actually a character that has relatively a lot of decent, mysterious stuff. An engine is just the frame and foundation of a house. It tells you where you can put wires and stuff, but you don't need to tear the whole thing down just to put in a few new outlets and update your wiring.

I played Encore 3 times because I wanted to see the story. Once I had the end of the story, it was a shitfest.
I played Kell's Fall because I wanted Slayer's Fang. Once I had it, and was told I had to run the mission 4 more times for the intrinsics, I dropped the game until Heresy came out.
I played Heresy until I had the guns I wanted from it, then I stopped playing until EoF.
When EoF released, I played the intro story mission, but it was boring, and there is no other content I want to play, so I didn't.

People were generally doing that because they weren't getting the focus on Zombies anymore.

The end of destiny 2 is pretty much guaranteed to be leaving it in a shitty state when they could have just left it alone. At the end of Episode Heresy things were alright, but of course they had to delete everything to make room for the new garbage. And that's exactly what will happen when they finally put the game in maintenance mode. They'll had just deleted a year of decent content, released a weak new DLC, and then will tell everyone to fuck off.

Moreover I think I've realized what I think the issue about getting new and returning people back in is. In both D1 and D2 until vaulting, there was a a set path that would guide you into the main sort of postgame loop of grinding for armour and weapon rolls, and if you weren't fucking with it that's when you'd stop playing. If you found it fun, you'd keep playing and would be happy with that. Now though, Bungie wants you to get to that loop ASAP, which if you're still active is just a race against getting burnt out after YEARS which I think is why you see people calling for either a D3 as a complete refresh or changes to the loot that'll have them playing it as little as possible. If you are new though, there's literally nothing else for you because even campaigns that used to serve as part of those guides into the postgame grind are just also now part of the grind.
