well as much as mine stays put away it does seem ridiculous at this point, but modern life without a smartphone is pretty difficult.
emergency calls, blending in with employment, mapping directions, McDonalds app heh and blending in with society in general. If it were up to me all cell phones would be thrown into the ocean and we would all go back to POTS lines. This is just a cheap practical way of silencing your mic when you need to, and as the other anon stated there are a million more ways "they" (whoever your they is) have to watch you.
It may all be for not, and it may be a losing battle, but going down swinging makes me feel better about it.
