it's not that the tech was better, it's that the people using the internet were all computer people instead of vapid phonepigs. Using it required you to have a desktop computer. Google was so good before it went to shit. Social media didn't exist at all, everyone everywhere was taught never to use their real name. It was simultaneously more earnest and less serious, you'd get a warm fuzzy feeling from this amazing new thing. Knowing you had what it took to be there, unlike 98% of the human race, felt good. Facebook and the iphone ruined the internet, once corporations figured out they could sell user information it became a mad dash to squeeze every last bit of info out of a user, which led to things like SEO which is why google is shit now.
