dialup fucking sucked i can't lie
>>105985294 (OP)it's not that the tech was better, it's that the people using the internet were all computer people instead of vapid phonepigs. Using it required you to have a desktop computer. Google was so good before it went to shit. Social media didn't exist at all, everyone everywhere was taught never to use their real name. It was simultaneously more earnest and less serious, you'd get a warm fuzzy feeling from this amazing new thing. Knowing you had what it took to be there, unlike 98% of the human race, felt good. Facebook and the iphone ruined the internet, once corporations figured out they could sell user information it became a mad dash to squeeze every last bit of info out of a user, which led to things like SEO which is why google is shit now.
but zoomers will insist that javascript is "slow"
It's like growing up in a small comfy town, and then moving to a huge city with millions of people who are all cunts and the insane traffic and everywhere has criminals and cops, the smell of exhaust permeates everything, the buzz of power lines gets louder and louder, engine noises and gunshots ruin your sleep, annoying neighbors bumping shitty music, their fucking kid stomping on your ceiling or kicking your wall, pick your annoyance. If you never knew anything else of course it bothers you less, but we who know what we left behind will always wish we could go back.
The memes are better now though, one good upside to the crowding.

Anybody who would say that dialup internet was better is a retard. The internet that existed in those days was better. The number one reason was because you were not on it. When I had broadband internet (sometimes cable sometimes DSL depending on where I lived) in the early 2000s it was a truly glorious time. You weren't there. It was wonderful.

>>105985294 (OP)Yes it was better.
Not for what it was (dialup internet and Nutscrape 4 sucked balls), but for what it represented.
The Internet was a place that you sat down at, dialed up your ISP, did your stuff, and then did something else.
It didn't follow you around with stupid notification spam, and kids weren't groomed into becoming trannies on Discord.
Now everything is instant, you aren't sure if the guy on the other end is a bot or a tranny, and everyone has their faces buried in their phones.
>>105985294 (OP)Well, If you had 128kb-512kb communal internet it was pretty shitty. We had such internet at the beginning shared between something like 30 flats. I remember that it was reasonably fast when we upgraded to a non-shared 1Mb. If we had 100Mb or even 10Mb with the websites of that time everything would be fucking instant.
>>105985294 (OP)The slow loading sucked, but visually that design was way better than many current sites.

The speed sucked, the community (including the many websites they hosted) was far better.
My internet today is very small, my "people" of dorks relegated to an ever-shrinking corner. In those days, however, I could spend hours searching and find interesting people sharing their love for things. I didn't need to mentally filter 99.9999% of it for my own sanity and enjoyment of life.
The phrase "You had to be there" was never more apt.

Is the problem really just that there's no search engine for nerds and nerd websites? I understand most people, even nerds, just stopped making regular websites. But it's not like it's a struggle to keep normies off your website, they don't even go to websites they only use apps. And all the tools are still there, so what's missing? The internet was great when it *could only be accessed by high-IQ dedicated people with the motivation to go out of their way to learn computers*. Yes they were mostly white, but a whole flood of dumbfuck balls stupid suburban whitoids were also part of the plague that ruined it.
Few people here are probably old enough to remember how difficult it really was to get online back in the day, when your computer's operating system itself supported no such thing and you needed to acquire third-party PPP/SLIP protocol software.. which naturally you couldn't download because *you weren't online*. So you either had to get it from someone's dialup BBS (which were awesome but beyond the scope of this post) or find a floppy disk somewhere from some underground computer store or a photocopied newsprint software catalog.

>>105985450obviously, newton was explaining how staying inside converts you into gay, not, "being outside", as you've so fallaciously tried to exert.
being outside converts the gay waves into straight waves, and removes the gay.
while staying indoors compels the strait waves that make their way inside to skew and bend, turning them gay.
from this we can expand the theory outward towards civilization.
a civilized society will always create gays, because, in order to survive you must bend and skew the truth, otherwise you may end up getting sodomized by the fags there in.
but in the uncivilized wilderness, the only way to survive is to be a straight shooter, otherwise you'll be destroyed.

>>105985294 (OP)I never had this issue. We got internet I think in 1997, a bit late but my family didn't want dialup. We lived just by the headquarters of the first national cable company so when they started offering connections (quite cheaply too) we jumped on it. It was cable so I think it begun at 256K but got bumped to 512K quite fast. At the time there was really nothing to saturate a 256K connection, everything loaded as fast as it could on a 133Mhz processor. When I visited my friends who had internet too, most of the time they had dialup and I never really quite understood back then why the fuck can nobody use the phone when the internet connection was open. Things changed so fast, it felt like within a year everyone locally dropped dial up connections and had cable.

Extreme bandwidth limitations = extreme evolutionary pressure selecting for fittest = much higher quality content = virginal consumer experience has a very high % chance for pleasure + influenced into becoming a high quality producer
No bandwidth limit = no evolutionary pressure = seas of slop pollution interspersed with tiny islands of high quality = virginal consumer experience has a very high % chance for displeasure + corruption into becoming a low quality producer
It is a common limitation of a species that does not accelerate each individuals capacity in equivalent pace to their technology. If the current internet were fully populated with superhumans, it would be superior to the past, but because everyone is just about the same as they ever were, imagination has a finite output per year, thus entertainment starvation.

Millennials are fratured generation and even if we want to discuss generations now. In all honesty I think generations these terms are absolutely meaningless because after 2001-05ish we've had no real culture difference between generations. So there is no real "style" cultural difference. So alpha, zoomers, and millennial are all just one huge group. Even the fucking memes and terms are all millennial basically.

Of course, some percentage of them might have been catfishing males.
But people would get to know each other in these communities quite well over time, and actually bond and have real human connection on this big incredibly novel thing that everyone loved. And there were definitely real women.
Once digital cameras(plus scanners to a lesser degree) became common, it was much easier to prove that fact as well.

It only took a year until I was living with my mom instead of my dad and we had cable internet installed in our house. I knew exactly what to do with it too.
>>105990827It didn't.
Text was just more important.
There were some poorly designed websites that took way too long to load, but you still had traditional old school chatrooms, usenet, IRC, ICQ etc.
Things were actually improving for a while, and that was constantly exciting. Then some sort of peak happened in the 2000s and things started going downhill.
Broadband was nice though.
>>105991388Yeah, but that was local unless you were willing to pay long distance fees. A lot of the people(users and/or sysops) would know each other in real life or meetup and such. I tried a few.

>>105985518The terrorism on USA was a good thing, they got a taste of their own medicine for once. But it has nothing to do with the internet. The normies happened because some cuck wanted to sell it to everyone.
>>106007112Well in the context of the piracy scene toll fraud dominated. Files spread across continents through theft of long distance and international service. The most obvious targets were the "extenders" set up by companies like AT&T and MCI. They were mostly irrelevant for regular people at that point after the AT&T breakup but they still were important for business customers to be able to make calls while traveling. The BBSfags of the day would call up these extenders and brute force "wardial" the "codes" (basically PIN numbers) then use them to call all over the world without paying. BBSes welcomed these kinds of callers and treated them differently than local ones with special perks to attract them.

>>105994382>It was MUCH higher. Some of the chat rooms I used to frequent in were mostly females, and they were all really friendly and just as terminally online as the males.Yes. All the women would tend to congregate in chatrooms and such. So there was a much higher concentration.
A lot of men would be gaming playing Quake, Diablo 1 on OG Battle.net, Ultima Online(although some girls played this one) etc, so there was a bit of a bias towards chatrooms and women, which tended to be pretty friendly and polite.

Malware was almost always extremely easy to avoid, save for the rare case of an actual worm or something similar.
>>105996120I used mirc for basically ever. I don't even remember using another client.

>>106007186Remember when popup blockers weren't built into browsers and you had to install them as a separate application? I used pirated ones on IE. Malware being easy to avoid I kinda disagree on. The old internet was a minefield and if you were trying to do something as basic as acquire pirated software it was easy enough to fuck up and get infected. I learned my lessons the hard way. But you must also keep in mind that worms were not the only threat. IE was a mess. You could get infected through shit like ActiveX exploits. Patches being delivered by automatic updates came later.

Many nights were spent with one of my fellow juvenile delinquents prank calling the numbers of kids we did not like from school, Burger King, and whatever else we felt like. Most of our calls were not very good, just replicating the Jerky Boys or whatever. But we got the person on the other end to rage more than once which was always a win.

I also get the feeling that the newfags are the most proponent of consumerist threads.
When I was 10 someone at school gave me a referral spoofer in like '99. Basically internet explorer was so shit back then that if you could guess the location of index.html there were these spoofer tools to bypass whatever authentication was there and make the browser think you're just refreshing. So imagine you want to view whats inside the paid area of http://porn.com/ if you guessed correctly that index.html is located in http://porn.com/members/index.html IE would let you access that page without authentication.
The verified working addresses that came with this tool were literally like 50% horse sex websites but the kids didn't seem to care.
Dialups and ISDN were shit, no fond memories there. Acceptable for playing games, even for something like Ultima Online but everything else was painfully slow. The internet as a phenomena back then was magical though. Maybe, in a retrospect, it was for the best that things took their sweet time to load - everything was done with intent in mind, and if you lacked such, often you'd rather do something else than use your computer.

The web? idk it depends on which parts your on.
I miss hanging out with my friends on IRC
We used to watch movies and shows together
I even made a script back then that used CTCP to synchronize playback
>>106012335The miss the reasons that it WAS better, not the reasons that it was worse. Obviously.
>>106008417Nothing was really censored to any appreciable degree.
Little retarded me made his first website in the 90s on geocities at like 12 years old and it was a 'warez' site that just curated links to direct downloads on other servers(aka I was a leech, it's embarrassing to think about desu lol).
Yes, it had flame gifs and loaded slowly because I was a stupid idiot.
But you could seemingly pretty much just get away with whatever. Even on something like geocities.
If you actually hosted your own server, it's hard to imagine much happening to you back then in the way of censorship.
The DMCA was like what, 1998 or something? Maybe that was the beginning. But not long after that everyone had broadband and p2p filesharing created a whole new censorship resistant world for many years.
>>105985381very well said
>>106008658Still, that fact that you would once in a while actually find passwords that worked on some of those sites was pretty wild.
Funny to think about how influenced everyone was even back then by exposure to internet porn.
All my friends and almost every guy I knew back then thought giving girls facials was essentially the goal of life...I wonder where we all go that idea from lmao
>>105985518Arab Spring was actually proof that the internet was a major success for psy ops, was pushed by Atlantic Council, State Department, etc.
It wasn't until OWS for the pivot, when they realized the mob truly has a mind of its own and cannot be controlled.
>>106008417>. i wouldn't know if it was censored back then, but i think it probably was even back then.People back then couldn't even fathom the extreme level of censorship we have now in their worst nightmares.(It's always been the EU and UN's wet dream though so obviously that's a bit hyperbolic) You could basically just do whatever the hell you wanted. Even relatively censorship/ban happy services like AOL were a bastion of freedom compared to anything today, even 4chan.
And because people seem to forget or don't realize it: It was only because the US owned the internet that the freedom remained as long as it did.
Also the 90s internet was massively superior simply because the vast majority of people on it (who were largely white, well educated, and well off) just did it for the fuck of it. Not for any profit motive. People made websites and shared their knowledge just because they could. Also everything was oriented around interests rather than social networks. And there was the novelty of near instantaneous long distance communication with people around the whole world.
>>106012335I'm not on the spectrum, but suspect you may be if you can't conceive the fact that the internet was better for social reasons primarily, rather than technological.
It was a once in a lifetime subjective experience that very few got to participate in.
To say it was 'objectively worse' in this context makes no sense.
You felt like you were a part of something special, and you were able to connect and socialize for the first time(sans perhaps BBS era) with other people who also recognized how impactful the internet is and was going to be in the future.
Chatting with people or posting on message boards, or creating a homepage was actually meaningful. People were online to connect with other people. Nothing like that in human history had ever happened before. It was a technological revolution, and unlike some where you only see it in retrospect...you and the few others who were there knew it was special at the time, and actually felt it every time you logged on.
Even something like playing a online game for the first time felt magical. Battle.net was invented with Diablo 1 and all of a sudden you learn what a 'guild' is, and suddenly you have friends and enemies from all over the world.
Experiencing an actual MMO like Ultima Online, or a 3D one like Everquest was like living in a scifi novel. You can't judge the experience from modern times, because back then there was nothing to compare it to.
I could go on forever, but it'd be like talking to a wall if you honestly think anything about the experience has anything to do with some 'objective technical comparison'.
>>106012787Yeah im not reading all of that
>>106012797I don't think I could have thought of a better reply myself to illustrate the point exactly.
>>105998051>online since 1999lol
u are liek child
by '99 I was already giving up mmorpgs after wasting a couple years of my life on that trash
>>105985294 (OP)>ackshually the internet sucked for you back then, look at IGNThat's like saying the internet sucks now because of IGN. We didn't go there then for the same reason you don't go there now. The only thing that has changed are the exact symptoms.
>>106007093I remember like mid 2000's where everybody offered a yahoo groups-like alternative as replacement for the decomposing body of usenet. Wouldn't know what to call that.
Also google killed deja and never forgave them for that.
>>105996332>people who aren't you or anyone you know did an embraceget some original material
>>105994713it was over after ww2, kruger
>>106008161only if you play interactive movie AAA slop
>>106007579not the same thing, biological women in discord are always the same ran through BPD archetypes or genderflakes
>>106007564You will never be Japanese
>>105985294 (OP)dialup is the essence of soul down to the fucking weird ass electrinic banging noise it made during tge connection
>>106015569ding ding ding ding
dong dong dong dong
and more sounds that i can't think of onomatopoeia for. but i remember it in my head
>>106012572I never thought about it when I was younger but obviously in a porno context cumming in a girl is boring because you can't see it. A facial is more visually appealing than a creampie closeup. It did influence me to be more into cumming on girls than in them.
>>105985294 (OP)A world free of psychological hooks
>>106012745You should also consider that being in better company negates the need for censorship. I was exposed to disgusting and fucked up things on the early internet. This helped me learn how to avoid them. It also desensitized me enough to allow me to become a /b/tard. I didn't like looking at zippocat or gore pics or whatever else. It's something you had to tolerate to operate in that space. On the modern internet you have people trying to import that stuff into normie spaces. Like you're browsing Twitter trying to find out what's going on in the world and the new algo tweaked by Elon's jeets pushes you a video of a lady getting run over by a bus and her entrails spilled out into the street. Lovely. A normal person wouldn't see such things 20 years ago unless they went looking for them. Hence no push for censorship.
>>106016399why do you want to see another man's cum?
>>106016777why do you want to hear another man's music? why do you want to see another man's hot wife? fuck off outta here
>>106015291What about the 1950s?
>>105985294 (OP)At least you knew things were made and written by real people. Now you have to search longer through the jeet and bot content for a real content than you had to wait during dailup. I just want to go back to a world without 3rd worlders on the internet.
>>106016884Your fault for not killing jews and playing nice
deal with it
your decendants will all be brown or niggers
>>105990522The jews were still finding out how to corrupt the internet during that time. They only had knowledge about undermining countries and media like tv. The internet was a whole different beast since goyim had more control and everything was decentralised.
>>106016939How is it my fault that the anglos and the slavs formed a unholy alliance to defeat us before I was born.
>>106016944This makes me sad senpai.
>>105996065Twitter comprehensively demonstrates this theory to be wrong: High IQ people are still retards on Twitter, while Low IQ people could still bash together an interesting geocities site in Frontpage. The problem isn't the people, it's the tools they're using. Most of the people who got online from ~1995-2005 were normies of average to below average intelligence. Getting online has been outright retard proof since the iMac G3, and even for Windows users normies have always had the option of paying someone else to do the hard bit for them.
The people who've come online recently are no worse (for all the whining about thirdies, most of the retards you actually see day to day are from the west) than the people who were online back then. The sites, on the other hand, are much worse. They're actively designed to make you a retard.
Imageboards are an odd edge case: The basic site design has been consistent, but moderation policies have drifted, and moderation is the main tool you've got to control how retarded your imageboard is. Most imageboards are badly moderated because they believe the problem is "banning bad people" rather than "creating selective pressure against bad posts" - make it annoying to make bad posts, and bad posters will largely turn good or disappear.
>>105990978wiby.me is for you. The big problem is, people don't make many valuable web sites these days.
>make thread mocking internet nostalgia
>it turns into an internet nostalgia thread
Hope to post with fellow oldfags again some other time
