>during wartime it's easier to jug around just one set of tools and material to fix 1 type of aircraft, have 1 set of mechanics that know every bit of the airframe
Yeah, you're quite right and I totally agree with you on that...
but reading that makes me think about the Mig-29 example were the Russian designed it with its engine to have a life time of around 300hours of operationnal flight during wartime...
It was simpler for them to build/rebuild 29's engines than to have to practice maintenances tasks every few hours of flights...
Plus, their reasoning was that during wartime, a Mig-29 would likely be shot/put out of combat around after 300hours of combat...

It all boils down to scalability and logistics when you think on a larger scale...
So yes, what you said is spot on, but I am still wondering about the Ultra-specialized vs Multirole (albeit various adjusted versions of them) A/C's...

Because there are so much pro's and con's for eachothers, but I might have a little bias for wanting to witness newer designs / disruptive designs like it was the fashion back a few decades ago... ^^'

PS: your picrel has a slighlty ressemblance with the Jaguar, but thanks for sharing one of the first inception of a potential Navy F15 @_@ !

PS: I was about to post the "successor" of the Jaguar, but since you posted a Mariner, here is a pic of the last Super Etandard just before decomission in the French Navy... ;)

REPS: Speaking of "navy", I must reckon your beautifully designed Macchi MC72 with contra rotating propeller for the Schneider Cup...
Once again, something that fade into the void but would really mean something if it was bring back up ;)
Such a beautifull plane... A marvel...
