So the coloration of the OG release was clearly an homage to Initial D. The hood scoop is from Transformers/Microchange Cliffjumper, the name "Type D" probably refers to the infamous lava-diving equipment from Evangelion, and the font on the side is from Galaxy Express 999. What other easter eggs is this thing hiding? At this point I feel like there has to be even more.
