Looking at boorus, another thing I've noticed is that those characters tend to have very, uh, hairy eyelashes, as opposed to having them drawn as a solid line. Maybe more thorns and spikes would help with getting closer to the idea. Also saw one or two examples of eyelashes with significantly darker color than hair, but still tinted in the similar direction, but I think that only works for very flat drawings.

i don't even want to make an avatar with blonde eyelashes, i'm just really curious about what exactly makes this trope work
