Openness of each area varies between DS3 and Bloodborne levels. 'straight line' isn't quite right though, the path frequently loops back on itself with unlocked shortcuts, and there are plenty of diversionary side paths. But it's just never enough to get lost exploring like in DS1. The DLC does large, more open areas with more complex layouts. I got lost a few times in the underground facility.
