I would always choose a full-tang, fixed blade knife if I was relying on it for self defense. There’s less that can go wrong and it will always be more dependable/tough depending on the blade steel. For defense against a human or animal, you really don’t need anything more than 3” imo. If you subscribe to the “switches and timers” school of knife fighting, you really don’t need more than 2” against a human assailant. Pic related is my EDC blades. I often carry my Emerson tanto A-100 in my pocket, but I always have my Winkler Razorback concealed in my waist. That said, both of these knives exceed your budget, with the Winkler costing around $600.
