I'm from Texas, and NYC felt *too* safe. But that was Manhattan. I didn't get sketch vibes at all. Probably a different story in some of the outer boroughs, but I think people are still imagining the place like it was in the 1980s. Chicago gave me hairier vibes. People get around in their cars everywhere here but Texas is a moderately higher crime state. The closest I've come to being mugged here was in Houston.

I guess that happened but statistically it's like a blip. There are so many people there and the city is so dense, walking around on foot and taking the subway during rush hour is like being in a crowd being let out of a stadium. From my perspective, the only time I've ever felt like I was "in New York" here was in downtown Austin during SXSW and there were just thousands of people everywhere on the sidewalks.
