It just gives you stamina/speed buffs along with health regen.
It was slow to the point where I went an entire 40+ minute round exploring the map without it going down to the half way point. Not sure if I even want the hunger mechanic to be too intrusive as sieges will be plenty long.

Yeah I found out that if you save stamina and wear light/no armour you can ford the small rivers and leave the keep area. I just did that for 4 or 5 rounds as remnants. Farthest out I got was close to the Weed.
My favorite part was the last siege today where the devs spawned bears in the courtyard and I got mauled.
