The font (I've been using front and text interchangeably xD) doesn't feel like it fits sometimes with the picture, its hard to find a universal front for all pictures so you might have to go for a few preferred front styles you can switch around with, even mixing more than one type of text
You could try out a few different versions of the stories you have in mind and experiment with similar pictures and themes to see which ends up best or have it all follow a character or the same "universe" it takes place in.
Going over the picture can be done, its not a hard rule but it needs to be done "tastefully" or placed with some thought into it. I think this pic in my post does it well enough, and not too intrusively.
Yeah side bars make sense for long written text or story as you get more space alone the length of the picture. Some put it above or below for shorter captions depending on the picture size.
