I've learned that trying to apply any kind of consistent logic as to how gem physiology works is a lost cause. Yes their bodies are just constructs made from light and the only "real" part of them is their gem. And yet, their bodies can still do all the things a physical body can do. It doesn't make sense most of the time but who cares
