You can see from sales graphs that the first couple of weeks make up for something like 80-90% of the total revenue.
So yeah, a "real fan" WOULD buy something on launch day, that would only be logical. "Pirating first, then buying on sale, once the hype dies down", on the other hand, is a totally emotional stance from you.
