Story told from the PoV of a former SEAF volunteer. A Terminid invasion took his planet by complete suprise, to the point where even getting high priority evacs was barely happening. He joined to help get the mass evacuation ships up and running, not only because it's the right thing to do generally, but because his children were to be put on those ships.
Just as it SEAF is starting to get things under control. The illuminate invades. He doesn't know if his children made it off world, and as Super Earth control over the planet deteriorates, his squad stops receiving orders, and he deserts.
When the illuminate starts an extensive bombardment campaign against the terminids, he paints over the Super Earth symbol and the national colors on his armor. If he dies here, he would die happy knowing that Democracy really does Protect and that his kids made it off world to his Helldiver wife. His "heresy" goes unpunished, and he loses faith.
This is where we pick up with him, 2 months have passed since he lost all hope of his children being alive and of rescue. He is a husk of a man, going through the recursive motions needed to keep himself alive, out of habit more than desire.
The illuminate have already harvested most of what was useful on this planet and are pulling out.
By coincidence, he runs into a bunch of Voteless moving aggressively towards one building. He puts his life on the line to save this stranger. An illuminate dropship arrives, and he gets critically injured fighting the overseers. Then he sees he wasn't saving a human, and instead, it was a Terminid Hive Guard. He slumps over and accepts his fate, but she decides to return his kindness and risks her life fighting the overseers to save him.
They escape, and being so lonely and broken for so long, they begin to bond despite their mutual hate. Eventually, they fall in love, and after the illuminate leave, they build a little house in the woods together.
