For nearly all the DIY stuff, so long as you've got good ventilation when you're mucking about with chemicals like glue (so basically just open the windows) and aren't actively huffing the fumes you'll be fine 99% of the time. I do think that any fumes from a hot wire cutter going through high density polystyrene probably aren't good for you, but considering the size of the scenery bits you're making its not a huge deal and probably just me being boring. Same deal as the moon rocks in pic-related - a heat gun melting lumps of polystyrene is going to create some interesting chemical reactions I personally would try avoid breathing them in, but its not like trying to remove all the asbestos from an attic.

The big exception for this is if you're doing anything with resin, whether that's 3D printing or cleaning up more traditional castings. Resin dust and chemical fumes are Very Bad and should always be treated with care.
