I can see where you guys are coming from with the range compression and gimmick talk: but my first exposure to actually playing toy soldiers was fuckin 40k so going to something with one or two silly game-y mechanics isn't a big deal for me: I am also here more for the modelling and wargaming than any actual historical recreation: i like these units and want to use them and haven't had many issues with the system, and 40k puts fucking strategic long range assets on a two meter battlefield all the time (and is getting far worse for arty and aircraft)
I agree on the midwar w/ dynamic points as well: I'd run my sherman assault company (the one with T14's and early 75mm's) a few games before i realized i was paying like four or five extra points per tank and it made my list way more usable: also find midwar soviets to be fun to play into since they flip the tank dynamic on even a tiger (IS-85's are scary, wish we had KV-85's anywhere but alas)
I really haven't run into a cunty german player yet since our kraut guys want to play stuff like static infantry units with stug support (i cannot convince him to print stug IV's) or bagration mechanized lists (strong but not horseshit to deal with), and my primary late war list is a bunch of HVSS 76's with extra armour and a platoon jumbo, backed up by T26E5 pershing jumbos anyway
i might still turn into the douchebag german player though
