My game looks like this and I didn't do any of the art. I was on a team of 4 with 2 programmers and 2 artists.
Each individual asset may not be very impressive, but when they're all moving at the same time and each of them has its own logic and scripts then the sum total of the movement on the screen is quite pleasant, especially when floods of viruses are moving into the cell and filtering through the other organelles while the lysosomes chase them down to digest them. It's kind of like what I said here >>533768632 about zerglings.
