Do you think that the BL authors miss the point when they try to make everything the Imperium does as justified and reasonable as possible? It started with them stating that every xeno did stab humanity in the back during the Age of Strife (rather than it just being an exaggeration for propaganda purposes), and has since moved on to stating that the admech and ecclesiarchy are completely justified as their faith works and is the only reason the Imperium is able to hold back the tides of darkness. Back in the old days, when a Guard commander ordered a billion guardsmen to charge the mile high walls of a fortress city so that he could drive tanks over their dead bodies into the city before the titan reinforcements arrived and took all the glory for themselves, it was portrayed as a dumbfuck and horrifically evil move. Nowadays, we'd get the same scenario, but the Guard commander would be doing it because the rebels have a device that's going to open up another eye of terror or something, and he has no artillery or sappers on hand to take down the walls.
