Countdown to Revision: Nippon Rearms

Following the creation of the Pacific Defense Treaty Organization (PTDO), Nippon lawmakers began to focus on revising Article 9. As discussed previously, Article 9 is the codification of pacifism in Nippon. It renounces war as a sovereign right of the nation and prohibits the maintenance of armed forces or other war potential. There is, however, much left interpretation, and over the past several decades Article 9 has been interpreted to permit the creation of the Self-Defense Forces, permit in limited circumstances the deployment of peacekeepers, and so forth. Each time, the pacifists protest. But, the pacifists lost the election.
Now it is time to carry out what Shinzo Abe set out to accomplish--revising Article 9 and expanding the Nippon military. The question, however, is it too late? Shina activity has been on the rise. Their air and sea intrusions into Taiwan airspace and seaspace occur daily. WeChat is flooded with commentary from pro-nationalists calling for the invasion of Taiwan. The drums of war beat louder.
Nippon's leaders feel the clock is ticking. Diplomats still speak of peace, but in Beijing, the tone has shifted--less diplomatic, more defiant. Something is coming. Whether Nippon can rearm in time, or if Article 9 will stand as a tombstone over a fallen state, remains to be seen.
