I'm going to keep this post in mind in particular next time I do a study, I don't think I'm thinking with abstractions and groups currently and instead I'm just drawing exactly what I'm looking at in that moment
I think my fixation on detail in still life and contour drawing comes from a childhood memory in art class when I did a really cool still life of a toy tractor with lots of detail and everyone was really impressed but I didn't even know how I did it as I was doing it, so maybe I subconsciously associated detail with ability and now I'm chasing that dragon as an adult through obsession with miniature features to the detriment of the overall picture
or maybe sitting down in the psychiatrist's armchair and trying to psychoanalyse a misremembered childhood memory to make excuses for not applying fundamentals as an adult is stupid and I should just fucking draw
I'm going to fill the rest of this page tonight with more of the cognitive drawing thing, I'm just posting this now because my hand hurts
