I think the show was a way to launder money for something nefarious. Which is why they used a lot of shortcuts like that crowd scene where you could see the same people in different parts of the shot.

In general prequels are lame. Even if they do a good job the stakes are lower. EG you know Galadriel won't die because she's part of Fellowship etc.
