Compbowmen are a high DPS glass cannon that is highly effective against melee units with high pierce armor, and reallistically, good vs anything that is not siege, so long they are meatshielded, absolutely shreds cavalry and infantry with high PA, like eagles and husks
But I cannot emphasize this enough, do NOT use compbowmen are a crossbowmen replacement, they have shorter range, shoot slower and low damage vs long range and/or low PA units, they strictly good to melt enemy frontline, if you use them to trade with ranged units you will die, you NEED elite skirmishers or Armenian champions
I love compbowmen because they absolutely wreck enemy cavalry in a few seconds, with the meatshield of my pocket cavalry or my own skirmishers. Dies horrribly against siege but you should get redemption block printing monks for that. Or Warrior Priests. Or champions.
So compbowmen ARE good, but if you use them the same way you use archers they will suck.
