This sounds amazing actually.
Between missions, roam around and explore the Great Fox for the first time.
Talk to the Star Fox team between missions and get to hear their thoughts/opinions on what's going on.
Maybe other characters come onboard the Great Fox temporarily so you can talk with Bill, Katt, etc.
Would be especially cool if you can roam around as other characters if you've unlocked them.
Like imagine replaying the campaign as Falco and getting to talk to Fox between missions.
Upgrading the Arwings between missions I feel is a no-brainer as well. Better shields, new weapons, etc.
