I have read a lot of the Mega Man interviews before, and they didn't mention much of this, aside from maybe Rainbowman. People also see the obvious Astro Boy influence, but then not see the also obvious Cashern and Ninja Captor influence. The original concept is very similar to Ninja Captor, with each power up giving Rock a different symbol on his head, but this was deemed not possible on the Famicom hardware.
We also learn a lot about Nobuyuki Matsushima, the original programmer for 1-2. He created the trick to mash two sprites together, to give more detail than most other games at the time. Also his idea to allow Rock to change colors on the fly to signal what weapon he has.
