PotC actually has an unconventional plot structure if you're watching carefully.
>MC gets paired up with unlikely companion
>they go on an adventure to rescue his love interest
>on the way he encounters challenges that help him grow as a person
>he saves the girl
Then instead of the movie ending it goes on for another hour
>ruffian sidekick turns out to have been the real MC all along
>the whole first half was just a trick he played on Will to kick off the real plotline, recapturing the black pearl
>tricks the love interest into helping him
>the movie ends with Will throwing away everything he wanted at the beginning

Easily Disney's best and one of my favorite movies.
