>mfw a formulaic film full of quips is actually a legit 10/10
What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshit?
Why can't they replicate this magic anymore?
Would these films have been as successful without the supernatural angle?
>>213369745 (OP)>What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshitThe practical sets. You just feel the grime.
>>213369745 (OP)It's a well-produced film, despite being formulaic as all hell. It's rare to see entertaining, pulpy films like this despite it being what audiences want the most. What other films have pirates fighting undead skeletons or ghosts?. None I can think of, aside from Pirates of the Caribbean. It reminds me of when people refer to high fantasy as "generic fantasy", despite there not being many examples of it at all. It's the dark, nihilist slop that's actually generic, because it's all we fucking see nowadays.
>>213369792Plus good casting. idk that it's formulaic either.

>>213371031Yes.
But in 2026 everyone will think of Masters of the Universe, releasing June 5, 2026
>>213369745 (OP)In light of all the atrocious slop that Disney has shat out since 2014+, it's honestly amazing that a trilogy built off of a fucking theme park ride like POTC turned out as well as it did, all things considered.
Obviously the POTC films are just casual popcorn flicks themselves, but I honestly think they were really well made. Davy Jones's CGI is literally still better than 99% of CGI today, the soundtrack had a distinct feel of its own which worked well with the setting, some of the concepts were interesting and well executed (The Flying Dutchman's crew being fish-people sounds retarded on paper but the actual look on film worked imo), the wider cast of characters could be fun without Jack Sparrow being in every scene, etc.
>>213370123Itโs old head speak for old head
Why are you go so concerned with turns of phrase you donโt recognize cross your path?
>>213371388>it's honestly amazing that a trilogy built off of a fucking theme park ride like POTC turned out as well as it did, all things consideredThe tired to do this again 3 times now and failed all 3 of them.
>>213371388The soundtrack was just Zimmerman replaying his Gladiator work
>>213371388Don't forget the choreography is unique and well done as well. The first time Depp and Bloom fight in the blacksmith store has more verticality and movement than most movies currently made.

I guess $200 million adjusted for inflation
>>213370075Yes, that's why she was so hot.
>>213372560She is a plank
>>213369745 (OP)>Why can't they replicate this magic anymore?Because producers and writers there now are creatively and culturally bankrupt. "What if we take (white-people shit), and remake it with less white people" is the full extent of their creativity.
And it showed with the last POTC movie where the fucking dwarf was magically alive, as well as the retcon of how Jack got the Black Pearl and compass.
>>213372618The dwarf was dead before 5?
I rewatched them recently, 2/3 were way better than I remembered
>>213372636Yes. He was one of those who died off-screen when Captain Blackbeard used his magic to kill the Black Pearl crew, take the ship, and shrink it. Barbossa was the only survivor, but lost a leg in his escape, and the dwarf was nowhere to be found for Strange Tides after that. Then with the next one he's back without explanation.

>>213370225it was carried by Geoffrey Rush thoughbeit
>>213369745 (OP)It's also pretty dark for a disney movie. The protagonists are all morally dubious. They scheme and backstab each other, it was great.
>>213369745 (OP)I'm old af and watched the first movie in theaters.
What a lot of people don't recall is how this film caught everyone by surprise. Hollywood did a HORRIBLE job at marketing it before its release and it's like they didn't which demographic it was meant for.
>>213369745 (OP)Didn't they quickly devolve into feminist slop with the whole movie serving the sole purpose of presenting an empowered and independent female pirate princess being bossgirl? Dint tell me you actually consume this kind of media, OP.
>>213369745 (OP)MCU Capeshit has and always been souless, the peak of absolute slop cinema that is nothing but a souless CGI fest, with the most bland character you've ever seen, none of them as any edge to it, even Tony Stark, the only movie where he is a real character is the first Iron Man.
I can't believe that so many people pretends that the Avengers movie are great.
>>213374817>didn't watch the movie but has strong opinions on it anyway
It wasn't made by a table of shareholders asking what is the most profitable and politically correct everything to hit all the checkboxes for a DEI check

>>213369745 (OP)what makes it work is that it feels like an old school adventure movie. By all counts it is a modern movie, but it has a genuine swashbuckler spirit beating in it and you can easily imagine someone like Errol Flynn being the lead.
>>213369745 (OP)>Would these films have been as successful without the supernatural angle?Moreso. This franchise died on the CGI vine.
>>213369829The original trilogy was pretty much beat for beat with Star Wars, which makes it amusing that Disney proceeded to simply buy Star Wars outright afterward.

>>213381527Jack Sparrow is a genius for some reason
>>213376621Yea. It's what make Star Wars work or Willy Wonka. You need a Luke, or a Charlie, or a William Turner to be your every man blank kind of character. Turner is capable himself, but not as seasoned around pirates. So it balances well. Jack being the lead ruins the balance.
>>213381190If they do another I'd rather they ignore those retcons from 5. But bringing Davy Jones back would be dope
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tnLYEwZRgU
Davy Jones is one of the coolest characters ever put on film.
When was it released? 2003.
Back then even medium budget flicks had better quality than the big budget slop churned out today.
>>213383001Bill Nighy is probably too old for the role now.
Weird take but Dead Man's Chest was my favorite movie.
Quite amazing what can happen when you aren't using a green screen for nearly 100% of your film. This is where action movies have gone completely wrong in the past few years. It's uncanny, flat and not immersive at all. I don't care if it saves you a few bucks. Maybe think about making more than saving.

Fact: the earlier Disney movie Muppet Treasure Island, a pirate movie with a Hans Zimmer soundtrack which the Pirates movies followed in the vein of, was originally intended to be a King Arthur movie with the Muppets when Jim Henson died, it probably would have told the older Welsh version of the legend where Arthur had five sons with Guinevere, the eldest son being Amer, and not a movie about the French revision of the legend where Mordred his illegitimate son by the witch Morgana LaFey (actually a faerie queen in the real history) was Arthur's only heir.
The answer to your question about why movies like this haven't kept up, is politics
What happened to Gore Verbinski? He makes the best adventure movie/trilogy since Indian Jones then disappears forever. Did Lone Ranger kill his career or something?
>>213383221I saw Dead Man's Chest and At World's End in theaters at midnight. I still remember the audience going crazy when Barbossa shows up at the end.
Only the OGs will remember Jolly Roger from the online game. Really hope Disney has the balls to bring him into the new movie, this guy obliterates Salazar, who was basically his dollar store knockoff.
For those who donโt know, this guy isnโt just some cursed pirate, he's a full-on undead warlord who got revived by voodoo magic after cheating the Pirate Lords at cards. Instead of just being mad at Jack, he declared war on all pirates and tried to wipe out the Brethren Court. Dude had skeleton armies after reanimating fallen sailors and other pirates at the sea and he has full control black magic. Basically the Uchiha Madara of this franchise, they could literally make this into a billion dollar kino if they lock the fuck in.

>>213369745 (OP)>What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshit?Capeshit is based on comics that never sold well or were liked much outside the USA. By the time that hollywood started gambing billions in production costs on films with 'Captain America' in the title to global audiences it can only be assumed that hollywood executives had consumed so much cocaine that not just thie sinuses were rotten but that their forebrain had become necrotic as well.
Pirates, swords, flintloc pilstols and sailing ships on the other hand are a thing everyone can get into, as opposed to aging has beens in ridiculous latex suits green screened into CGI cartoons with the stuck record theme of might is right
>>213370092Speak for yourself. I caught the 3rd movie on ABC I believe on one of their thursday/sunday night movie broadcasts in my 20s and that was my introduction to the franchise. I went out and bought the other dvds shortly thereafter and to this day those 3 movies rank very high for me.

>>213385746Yeah, Haunted mansion failed twice too. Surprised they couldn't make that one work but then again their obsession with making that ride into a black person movie is probably what tanked it
>>213369745 (OP)films about english people are always kino
>>213385746>Jack back to supporting role instead of mcwould be kino, him being the weird mentor man is what made 1 so great
>>213381104The writing and editing is great in the first flick, but mediocre in the sequels.
>>213383515Best part of that movie. I was disappointed by the sequel after watching it opening weekend. I didn't bother going to the theater for part 3.
>>213369945I saw it too in 2003, i had my first kiss during that film.
>>213388208The writing is underrated, I just couldn't follow it when I was young
The motivations and constantly shifting allegiances in the 3rd movie is kino and actually very well written if you keep track and follow what's happening. Every decision made is perfectly consistent with that characters motivationand current understanding of the situation.
>>213389089>The writing is underratedThe writing turns Jack into a caricature in the sequels and unfortunately Depp's performance is also a copycat of his original work in the first movie. Very unclever... same with the writing. And it showed. You may not remember that both sequels began filming without a finished script.
>>213369829It was also an original story. Capeshit is partially so fucking gay because every nerd who read a comic turns into a professor yammering about โdood this is the story where Dr turdshooter gets the dildo of destiny & becomes Godโ.
I respect Star Wars & POTC far more for creating an interesting story without having most of the work done for them.

You are really underselling the film. Is it a straight-forward adventure? Yes. But it's also one of the most expertly crafter sea-faroing experiences in cinematic history, with fantastic action from a couple of heart-throbs at the prime for their career. It's a movie that can't be replicated.
God it's just so endlessly rewatachable and so much fun to experience.
>>213369745 (OP)The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out at the right time for what it was going for. There seems to have been a general scarcity of pirate movies during the 2000s, except for Disney's series.
>>213391016Who would have been buried in the cemetery in their backyard, anon?
>>213391269It also came out when LotR was still in vogue and people could reliably expect a fantasy-adventure movie with maybe some historical elements to just be a damn good movie.
Disney also made John Carter which was way better than I expected. That was like their last decent live action movie and I can't think of anything else after that even felt similar, whether it's disney or not disney.
>>213391472>Anon, what is that poking me in the back?
>>213369745 (OP)Formulaic doesn't necessarily have to mean bad. These movies were made when the accountants would stay the fuck out of the way and let the creatives actually make a good product instead of endless studio mandated rewrites and reshoots making everything an incoherent mess.
>>213369797The american entertainment industry simply does not want to tell stories for some reason.
>>213369987I want to believe
>>213369987Bet you remember when 4chan was good. And not the festering shithole it is now.
If you guys want more pirate kino beyond POTC I'd strongly recommend Black Sails.
>>213392341>Black Sails.Too much gay...............
But the first few episodes with the british and black lesbians was nice.
>>213369987post your wrinkly hand
>>213392341What if I want to watch something that isn't gay propaganda?
My Nephew really enjoyed the ride at Disney, so now I'm working through all the movies with him. We're up to Stranger Tides right now. He wants to get to Yagsbaro.
>>213382622I saw it in an independent theater and I'm only 39. It was incredible.
>>213392341Black Sails pisses me off because Hannah New is literally one of the hottest women to ever grace a TV drama and yet she spends most of the show lezzing it up with some annoying mutt chick with a horrible french accent.
>>213369745 (OP)>James Norrington, do you fear death?>*stabs*it's just kino
>>213392917>Hannah NewI hate everything about britfags, but I do love the way their bitches ascents.
>>213392341Boring show and also gay so that's a no
>>213369745 (OP)>mfw a formulaic film full of quips is actually a legit 10/10Based, might rewatch later
>What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshit? It's based off a thing that was actually real, pirates (albeit extremely exaggerated and stylized even ignoring the magic stuff) rather than just being made up superpowers.
>Why can't they replicate this magic anymore?Hollywood ran all of the talented people out to replace them with browns and troons
>Would these films have been as successful without the supernatural angle? No definitely not, it's a crucial piece of the vibe. It gets taken too far in the second two movies but it is core to the franchise and worked perfectly for the first.
Black Pearl just had extremely good fundamentals. Great actors, exciting action scenes, amazing set desing, sound design, historical feel, and and excellent script. After many many rewatches I do think there's about 15 minutes in the middle where it drags but it's still not boring at all.
>>213369745 (OP)It's popular to hate Capeshit now, it makes people think they are smart, but they can still love quippy girlboss Disney Pirates.
>>213369745 (OP)Just all around higher quality in every single area. Properly written children's entertainment/adventure story. Excellent big budget direction, photography, effects, music etc. Proper casting. Capeslop, especially Marvelslop, is slop for a reason. It's lazy cheap garbage poorly chucked together for low IQ, low demand audiences.
>>213369745 (OP)In addition to just having great fundamentals, Black pearl worked so well because it was FOCUSED. It knew what the audience wanted to see, pirates. That vibe went into the DNA of the shots, sets, scenes, story, actors, weapons, locations, music, sound, all of it. It's like they asked at every step of the way "does this feel pirate like?" and that resulted in a product that feels pirate like which is what the audience came for. So the audience left happy.
>>213369905Fell out with Hollywood. Had a number of big projecta lined up, like Bio-Shock, but kept fighting with executives over their demands to constantly cut corners on production
>just hire jeet vfx guys bro>shoot it in serbia broThat sort of stuff.
>>213381035Sounds worse than JAGS BARRO tbqh
>>213369890>Formulaic? Most scenes are neat little twists on their generic counterpartsYeah OP is literally a retard.
>if you were waiting for the opportune moment...that was it
I just finished marathoning the first three and I see this thread. They are so fucking perfect it actually pissed me off how terrishit every fucking movie is now a days and how we took for granted that movies kept getting better.
They even made a feminist character that goes from being a damsel in distress to the literal king of pirates and it works. It didnt feel heavy handed or "woke", she earned every bit of it.
I am genuinely fucking seething over the state of culture and how all of the good movies are at least 10 years old. God fucking damn it
>>213370086>Hello, Fellow Geriatric Dudes!Weird flex

>>213384316Tried the same in my nursing home and got reprimanded for it. Iโm really glad you can show them kino
>>213383250It's not about saving money. Movies are more expensive to produce than ever. It's more that it's a jobs program/employment scheme to add value to the studios, bigger government grants and tax bennies, while also allowing for bigger tax write-offs.
>>213369745 (OP)Dead Man's Chest was better.
>>213392917No she doesn't? Their relationship ends in like episode 2 and she ends up marrying a white gigachad
>>213369745 (OP)>What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshit? The story was based on the Monkey Island games, which themselves were based on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. It's indirectly the best video game adaption.

>>213369792They prioritized "fun".
>>213371535>The first time Depp and Bloom fight in the blacksmith store has more verticality and movement than most movies currently made. That scene reminded me of Jackie Chan fight scenes. Specifically Shanghai noon and Shanghai knights.
>>213377408>>Hiding exposition in a fun moving plot instead of hitting the breaks to exposit nonsense for 10 minutesThey started doing this in the 2nd and third movie though.
>>213369797>>213369829are bots misusing the word 'formulaic'?
>>213371388This guy was so good as George III in John Adams
>>213370132Not going to lie, I enjoyed 5 more than 4 because the chick was hot as fuck. That scene with the dress gave me a boner
>>213371962>What about Prince of Persia and Lone Ranger and John Carter or Tron? He's talking about adaptations for rides from theme parks, not adaptations in general.
And speaking about that, I really loved Prince of Persia (watched it as a teen) and John Carter (watched it for the first time in 2022). They hold up really well.
>>213396872>generic modern tough guy haircuts and beardsinto the trash it goes
>>213369745 (OP)>What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshit?Cool worldbuilding, nice costumes and practical effects.
Too bad the series got sequeled into oblivion.
Orlando already had a lot of teenage girls with a poster of him on their wall.
>>213371075Leto will kill it by over acting. Or going full method skeletor and trying to ride a fucking panther or some shit
>>213369745 (OP)Modern entertainment is primarily a weapon. It's irrelevant they lose money because the same group prints the money.
>>213371521>ZimmermanWhen he hits, he hits. Unfortunately, he's equally capable of total wet farts like Dunc.
>>213369745 (OP)>one of cinemas greatest swordfightsyo its formulaic af bro. Like no cap
>>213369915I think Kiera is a genuine 9/10 i dont care about her flat chest
>>213401976I like Hans Zimmer but he can really only do swashbuckly adventure tracks. Also his Backdraft theme is underated. When the drums kick it gets you pumped to see some fire get wreKt.
He isnt like Williams or Giacchino where they can do suspense, adventure. Romance, whimsical, tension and add their own unique style to it.
Horner could do it too RIP
>>213402186Zimmer is great, just a bit overused by Nolan I guess. I think one of his better soundtracks is from the Lion King. This Land is a very emotional track. While I didn't like Interstellar, the music is great too.
Nobody appreciates this mate here. He was a badass. He refused Dave Jone's offer and went down like a dog, yes, but the point is that he said no and probably passed on to a better place instead of becoming a cursed pirate who is afraid of the judgement day. An by the way, this is one of the many reasons of the why this trilogy is so good. No way Disney would show a guy's troat being cut nowadays. Everything is too safe and sanitized and they take its colour away, they make it lifeless, without light. I have my personal theory that we are indeed very close to something bug and this corporations need to make the world more dark in order for those things to manifest. Darkness hate the light so the world must be involved in darkness if darkness wants to feel good to walk on this Earth.
>>213369792>>213369792>>213369792GOD. FUCKING. THIS!
Why does Hollywood fail to understand that practical sets + great soundtracks are literally the best indicators of a great movie
>>213369745 (OP)Every single person involved in these movies loved what they were doing and had fun doing it. It just shows on screen.
The people working on modern capeshit hate every single moment, from the actors who despise the greenscreen slop acting to the jeets who get paid in Google Play giftcards to do the CGI in one afternoon.
>>213402523>Ativar o Windows
>>213402812There is simply no soul to these productions. Check out BTS footage from Casper, Hook, Terminator, Pirates, Jurassic Park, and Lord of the Rings and you will see people outside, legit working, and BUILDING something. Now, it's so rare to see sets being built (e.g. the new Superman) that it has become an actual selling point
>>213402186zimmer did the soundtrack for call of duty MW2. and surprise, it's the best the series has ever had
>>213369792fpbp. /endthread
>>213403061I didn't watch Wicked, but I was very impressed from seeing the sets. They had full fields of flowers and did a lot of stuff in camera.
>>213370086Fucking hell you're old. I'm 28
>>213369987That's my favourite number.
>>213374817Yeah the third one shits the bed with girlboss retardation, but it's a decent movie with that excluded. 2 is still the best out of the trilogy

>>213404731Watch the third movie for your answer retard
>>213404751I did, recently. Elizabeth used a sword which I guess is enough to upset you? But that happened in the 2nd one too

>>213404796Ok I will. But I can't promise I'll come out in tears because a woman has a speaking role.
>formulaic
PotC actually has an unconventional plot structure if you're watching carefully.
>MC gets paired up with unlikely companion
>they go on an adventure to rescue his love interest
>on the way he encounters challenges that help him grow as a person
>he saves the girl
Then instead of the movie ending it goes on for another hour
>ruffian sidekick turns out to have been the real MC all along
>the whole first half was just a trick he played on Will to kick off the real plotline, recapturing the black pearl
>tricks the love interest into helping him
>the movie ends with Will throwing away everything he wanted at the beginning
Easily Disney's best and one of my favorite movies.
