PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
>mfw a formulaic film full of quips is actually a legit 10/10
What made Curse of the Black Pearl hit so much harder than capeshit?

Why can't they replicate this magic anymore?

Would these films have been as successful without the supernatural angle?

It's a well-produced film, despite being formulaic as all hell. It's rare to see entertaining, pulpy films like this despite it being what audiences want the most. What other films have pirates fighting undead skeletons or ghosts?. None I can think of, aside from Pirates of the Caribbean. It reminds me of when people refer to high fantasy as "generic fantasy", despite there not being many examples of it at all. It's the dark, nihilist slop that's actually generic, because it's all we fucking see nowadays.

It takes itself seriously when it needs to, and each character has their own quirks.
Jack is the irreverent one, Will is the disarming straight man, Barbosa is the sardonic asshole who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else and Elizabeth is the exasperated high horse rider. If this was the MCU, they’d all switch roles constantly because a writer REALLY wanted to get a certain quip into a scene but couldn’t crowbar the right character into it.

In light of all the atrocious slop that Disney has shat out since 2014+, it's honestly amazing that a trilogy built off of a fucking theme park ride like POTC turned out as well as it did, all things considered.
Obviously the POTC films are just casual popcorn flicks themselves, but I honestly think they were really well made. Davy Jones's CGI is literally still better than 99% of CGI today, the soundtrack had a distinct feel of its own which worked well with the setting, some of the concepts were interesting and well executed (The Flying Dutchman's crew being fish-people sounds retarded on paper but the actual look on film worked imo), the wider cast of characters could be fun without Jack Sparrow being in every scene, etc.

Because producers and writers there now are creatively and culturally bankrupt. "What if we take (white-people shit), and remake it with less white people" is the full extent of their creativity.

Fact: the earlier Disney movie Muppet Treasure Island, a pirate movie with a Hans Zimmer soundtrack which the Pirates movies followed in the vein of, was originally intended to be a King Arthur movie with the Muppets when Jim Henson died, it probably would have told the older Welsh version of the legend where Arthur had five sons with Guinevere, the eldest son being Amer, and not a movie about the French revision of the legend where Mordred his illegitimate son by the witch Morgana LaFey (actually a faerie queen in the real history) was Arthur's only heir.

The answer to your question about why movies like this haven't kept up, is politics

For those who don’t know, this guy isn’t just some cursed pirate, he's a full-on undead warlord who got revived by voodoo magic after cheating the Pirate Lords at cards. Instead of just being mad at Jack, he declared war on all pirates and tried to wipe out the Brethren Court. Dude had skeleton armies after reanimating fallen sailors and other pirates at the sea and he has full control black magic. Capeshit is based on comics that never sold well or were liked much outside the USA. By the time that hollywood started gambing billions in production costs on films with 'Captain America' in the title to global audiences it can only be assumed that hollywood executives had consumed so much cocaine that not just thie sinuses were rotten but that their forebrain had become necrotic as well.

Pirates, swords, flintloc pilstols and sailing ships on the other hand are a thing everyone can get into, as opposed to aging has beens in ridiculous latex suits green screened into CGI cartoons with the stuck record theme of might is right

It's based off a thing that was actually real, pirates (albeit extremely exaggerated and stylized even ignoring the magic stuff) rather than just being made up superpowers.
>Why can't they replicate this magic anymore?
Hollywood ran all of the talented people out to replace them with browns and troons
>Would these films have been as successful without the supernatural angle?
No definitely not, it's a crucial piece of the vibe. It gets taken too far in the second two movies but it is core to the franchise and worked perfectly for the first.

Black Pearl just had extremely good fundamentals. Great actors, exciting action scenes, amazing set desing, sound design, historical feel, and and excellent script. After many many rewatches I do think there's about 15 minutes in the middle where it drags but it's still not boring at all.

In addition to just having great fundamentals, Black pearl worked so well because it was FOCUSED. It knew what the audience wanted to see, pirates. That vibe went into the DNA of the shots, sets, scenes, story, actors, weapons, locations, music, sound, all of it. It's like they asked at every step of the way "does this feel pirate like?" and that resulted in a product that feels pirate like which is what the audience came for. So the audience left happy.

I just finished marathoning the first three and I see this thread. They are so fucking perfect it actually pissed me off how terrishit every fucking movie is now a days and how we took for granted that movies kept getting better.

They even made a feminist character that goes from being a damsel in distress to the literal king of pirates and it works. It didnt feel heavy handed or "woke", she earned every bit of it.

I am genuinely fucking seething over the state of culture and how all of the good movies are at least 10 years old. God fucking damn it

It's not about saving money. Movies are more expensive to produce than ever. It's more that it's a jobs program/employment scheme to add value to the studios, bigger government grants and tax bennies, while also allowing for bigger tax write-offs.

He's talking about adaptations for rides from theme parks, not adaptations in general.

And speaking about that, I really loved Prince of Persia (watched it as a teen) and John Carter (watched it for the first time in 2022). They hold up really well.

I like Hans Zimmer but he can really only do swashbuckly adventure tracks. Also his Backdraft theme is underated. When the drums kick it gets you pumped to see some fire get wreKt.

He isnt like Williams or Giacchino where they can do suspense, adventure. Romance, whimsical, tension and add their own unique style to it.

Horner could do it too RIP

Zimmer is great, just a bit overused by Nolan I guess. I think one of his better soundtracks is from the Lion King. This Land is a very emotional track. While I didn't like Interstellar, the music is great too.

Nobody appreciates this mate here. He was a badass. He refused Dave Jone's offer and went down like a dog, yes, but the point is that he said no and probably passed on to a better place instead of becoming a cursed pirate who is afraid of the judgement day. An by the way, this is one of the many reasons of the why this trilogy is so good. No way Disney would show a guy's troat being cut nowadays. Everything is too safe and sanitized and they take its colour away, they make it lifeless, without light. I have my personal theory that we are indeed very close to something bug and this corporations need to make the world more dark in order for those things to manifest. Darkness hate the light so the world must be involved in darkness if darkness wants to feel good to walk on this Earth.

Every single person involved in these movies loved what they were doing and had fun doing it. It just shows on screen.
The people working on modern capeshit hate every single moment, from the actors who despise the greenscreen slop acting to the jeets who get paid in Google Play giftcards to do the CGI in one afternoon.

There is simply no soul to these productions. Check out BTS footage from Casper, Hook, Terminator, Pirates, Jurassic Park, and Lord of the Rings and you will see people outside, legit working, and BUILDING something. Now, it's so rare to see sets being built (e.g. the new Superman) that it has become an actual selling point

PotC actually has an unconventional plot structure if you're watching carefully.
>MC gets paired up with unlikely companion
>they go on an adventure to rescue his love interest
>on the way he encounters challenges that help him grow as a person
>he saves the girl
Then instead of the movie ending it goes on for another hour
>ruffian sidekick turns out to have been the real MC all along
>the whole first half was just a trick he played on Will to kick off the real plotline, recapturing the black pearl
>tricks the love interest into helping him
>the movie ends with Will throwing away everything he wanted at the beginning

Easily Disney's best and one of my favorite movies.
