The elevators in Japan don't fuck around. The buttons work and people use them regularly. While I was there I saw there was a sort of public elevator etiquette where whoever was closest to the buttons would hold the door either until everyone got on or the elevator was full, in which case they'd immediately slam the door in your face if you didn't make the cut. The elevators also seemed to lack sensors to prevent them from closing on you. Pic related, a sign in the building I stayed warning you that the elevator doors are more than willing to accept your finger as sacrifice (I can't actually read it but the elevator it was next to was pretty vicious).
