Interestingly enough icons and imagery existed even as far back as the tabernacle to catacombs in early Christianity, Christ was allowed to be depicted because he had a visible human nature and is an icon of the Father, while the Holy Spirit is allowed to be depicted as a dove as it had energetically manifested as such when Jesus was being baptized, God the Father hasn't been depicted in any icon as far as I'm aware.
