Faith is a powerful motivation force. I remember reading an academic paper on human endurance a few years ago and there were comparison tests with religious people who had faith vs atheists.
It was always those who had faith endured more discomfort and pain than those without.
I do think there is something fundamentally in our nature that wants us to believe in a higher power, it's been that way for almost all of human history, it's so deeply engrained in us.
