I'm a Leefag, and I admit I was also tricked into thinking hard work vs natural talent was a theme of Naruto. To be fair, Naruto also had some moments where his mentors go "he's talentless compared to Sasuke but it's his determination to work hard and never give up that makes him special." With Lee, it's just compelling to see an underdog surprise everyone, also his taijutsu is cool and the animators gave Lee special treatment in his two important fights. If anything Kishimoto was wrong for shafting Lee completely in Part 2 after spending so much time building up his character in Part 1. All he had to do was give Lee the 8 gates moment against Madara instead of Guy. Madara acknowledges Lee as a splendid ninja, and his arc is then complete, he can die crippled and happy.
