Kind of, it's somewhat implied in the series that Golf Ball sees him in a platonic way and is too focused on challenges or her experiments to even care or do anything with him, so just wants to be partners for how he's subservient to her most of the time, but Tennis Ball wants more from her than just that, however he IS a bit too much of a pussy to go ahead and say it and she's too stubborn and angry with everyone else to notice it, so it stays like that where they can't get more along.

For BFDIA, it's on the fact that Tennis Ball has gotten very mean and trying to do anything to win now that he's gotten that far, even more without Golf Ball, who at this point sees her as inferior to her in some ways, he does regret doing it sometimes but is getting a bit on his head to stay on the competition and overconfident now that she's not being shackles to keep his ego in check since he's always boasting and showing how smart he is when Golfy is not ordering him around.
