In Japan, you're supposed to take off your shoes when you're going to either the Realm of the Gods or the afterlife so that you don't pollute those places with earth dirt/grime/sins.
It doesn't happen too often nowadays outside of some special ceremonies, but for example people in Japan still take off their shoes before comitting suicide since they don't want to drag their sins to the afterlife, and so that people know the death was a planned suicide and not them just falling off a building or randomly getting hit by a train/truck so their family doesn't try to get revenge on the train/truck driver.
