I'm trying to find the interview, but Tanigawa has stated that he doesn't want to be tied to grief. Disasters do happen, but we have to move on. It was an interesting interview, if I can find it again.

Yes we all know that. That is the main way to understand Haruhi and her series. But I think the disaster influence should not be ignored - Tanigawa is noted to be a survivor of the earthquake. The Kobe stadium which Haruhi attended was one of the stadiums affected by the earthquake, and I think its reference was intentional. One could say that the human contest with disasters is between something trivial against the divine. Entire religions have been created patterned around pleasing some deity in the hopes that a disaster does not break out.At the same time, Man has been working hard to prevent disaster from wrecking the civilization he has built up.
And we don't even have to go as far back at that earthquake - Noizi Ito drew Haruhi praying for the victims of the 2010 earthquake and associated Fukushima nuclear disaster. The concept of disaster, I find, is very much tied to understanding Haruhi.
