Why were overtly Japanese games, not just unfashionable, but outright maligned in the mid 2000s through to the early 2010s?

It's well documented that Japanese developers in general found the switch to HD development in the seventh console generation extremely challenging, which contributed to industry veterans like Inafune and Kojima openly saying that Japanese publishers needed to look Westward for the future of development, but it was open season on them in the gaming media as well.
