People are still trying to say that today. About 1/4 of playerbase was on Modern in S1(likely it's more now) and in Japan SF6 is the closest SF game to touch SF2 mania in large part due to Modern and you still have people saying they see zero evidence that there is a audience for these type of control schemes.
