They didn't even see Xbox as competition back then, the PS3 was in development way before the 360 was released.
The issue was later as they started mimicking everything Microsoft did due to being the underdog.

Not really, they're still the FIFA, COD, GTA and interactive movie machine.
They still have that niche, but it's losing steam to PC. ( no pun intended)
