Turns out the macguffin was the missing piece needed to get into Hecate's secret lair, and a statue I found ages ago allowed us to see through her second layer of defensive illusions.
Kicking her ass got us another orb when I was hoping for Izanami's Cape which I was informed would render me immune to the sea of flame's passive damage.
Before stepping into hell I'm parking the flying city over at Infini to see if I can't find the cape somewhere around there. No luck there yet but I did find weapons and armor shops with stupid good stuff and stupid high prices. Time to grind.
