I have used this tp link device but you should be able to use any device that can be flashed to openwrt.
What you want to do is set it up so it routes every device behind it over a vpn. Once you do that you don't have to worry about setting up software on each machine. Your entire network will be good to go.
and Nigel you might want to look into alternative tech like a BBS or anything that is not http. Get off the web and stick to obscure community and self hosted sites.
