This method that you mentioned works in some countries (like mine) but I think it might not work here. It only work if your goverment decided to "block" certain services by forcing ISPs to sinkhole them on their default DNS, so changing them will obviously bypass the block. But in this case those services themself (including 4chin) decided to block british IPs, so you will probably need to change your IP.

Preferably after the ban I guess. there are plenty of cope threads right now on /g/ about it, so you can find some sites to test them. If we get a confirmation from 2 or 3 VPN providers working on those banned services, then I think its safe to assume that VPNs do work in this case.

I have used this tp link device but you should be able to use any device that can be flashed to openwrt.
What you want to do is set it up so it routes every device behind it over a vpn. Once you do that you don't have to worry about setting up software on each machine. Your entire network will be good to go.

I am not really a homeserver guy, you would have to ask this questions in >>>/g/hsg/

Basically instead of sending your network requests straight to a website, you send the request to the VPN's server, who then forwards your request to whatever site you were trying to access and gives the result back to you. Meaning the website only sees the request coming from the VPN's server, not your IP. This has the added benefit of spoofing your location if the VPN server is in another country, hence it can circumvent geoblocks.
You can turn VPNs on and off freely - all the big ones will have an app you install that handles everything for you, you just turn it on or off, as well as picking the server location. Yes 4chan pass lets you post while using a VPN.
Self hosting a net-exposed server with a VPN is a bit more complicated, not all of them support port forwarding so look out for that.
