Russian soldier jailed for murdering wife on wedding night wants to return to Ukraine front

A Russian soldier who joined the army to escape a prison sentence has been jailed for 12 and a half years for murdering his new wife on their wedding night, a case that casts a harsh light on the social consequences of the war in Ukraine.
Alexei Marchukov, a junior sergeant, was on his second leave from the frontlines when he killed his wife, Marina, with a utility knife in a drunken, jealous rage just hours after they had married. The Yekaterinburg garrison military court sentenced him to a strict-regime penal colony for the murder, which took place in the village of Yurginskoye in the Tyumen region on 5 March.
After the verdict, Marchukov stated his intention to return to fight in Ukraine after serving his time.
The couple officially registered their marriage on 4 March and celebrated with family at the home of Marchukov's sister, Lyubov. She told local news outlet 72.ru that it was an "ordinary get-together" but that her brother was very drunk. Later that evening, after the newlyweds returned home, an argument broke out. Marchukov stabbed his wife in the heart, and she died from massive blood loss.
The victim's son, Andrey, said his mother had suffered previous abuse at Marchukov's hands but loved him deeply. "There was an incident last year when Mom disappeared... He had beaten her. And she said that she couldn't live like that," Andrey told reporters. "The next day, they reconciled: he begged her on his knees to come back."
Marchukov, who worked at a sawmill, had a history of disorderly conduct and brawling. His sister told journalists that he was given a choice by authorities: "either to prison, or to the SVO [special military operation]." He signed a military contract and went to Ukraine as a volunteer, where he became a squad commander.
