Couldn't find a good pic of it but apparently he did have a reputation as the smiling horse. He couldn't pace himself well which resulted in overexertion that left his mouth open while running. They eventually fixed the problem with some equipment to keep his mouth closed.
It sounds like he was a tame yet fun and memorable personality besides that gimmick, I should read more about him.
